The Instax Mini is the smallest and most popular instant film. The whole print is 54 × 86 mm (2.1 × 3.4 in), which lines up almost perfectly with a bank card, so it slides into card sleeves, wallets and phone cases. The picture itself is 46 × 62 mm (1.8 × 2.4 in), a tall 3:4 rectangle, with a thin border on three sides and a wider one at the bottom.
Polaroid 600, i-Type and SX-70 film all share one size: 88 × 107 mm (3.5 × 4.2 in) with a square 79 × 79 mm image. That's the square photo with the thick bottom border most people picture when they hear "Polaroid". It has almost twice the area of an Instax Mini.
Instax Square keeps the Mini's height (86 mm) but widens to 72 mm to fit a 62 × 62 mm square picture, so it's the closest Instax gets to the classic Polaroid look. Instax Wide is a landscape print, 108 × 86 mm, twice as wide as a Mini, made for groups and scenery.
On real instant film the wide bottom edge holds the pod of developing chemicals the camera spreads across the picture as it ejects the print. It stayed, and it's where people write captions.
